In The Beginning...
My mom used to crochet when I was little. She took some classes in the evening and I remember her making these hats for my sister and me. She also made a couple of afghans in harvest gold and avocado green. I remember asking her to "show me how" and she taught me how to make my chain stitches. But at that time, that was as far as I got...
Fast forward to modern times....
About 4 years ago, I was looking for something to do in the evenings while my husband watched TV. I started with a little needlepoint kit I had, but soon discovered my eyes just weren't good enough for the little stitches. Then, I remembered my grandmother had taught me to knit when I was a preteen, so I looked at my minimal knitting supplies and just couldn't get excited about that either.
So, the next time I went to the library, I found some books on crochet that piqued my interest. I checked out a few, bought a hook and yarn at my local craft store, and started playing around with it. The rest, as the saying goes, is history; I was "hooked". I've been crocheting up a storm every since.
My mom doesn't crochet any more, I think she stopped sometime in the 70's. So, with that being said, I felt it was my obligation to make an afghan for everyone in the family. :-)
Most people in my family have at least one blanket I've made for them, some have more. One of the very first projects I made was this afghan for my sister and her husband. I made it with Red Heart Super Saver yarn in "sage". As far as I know, it's still holding up and they are using it.
What are some of your first projects? How did you fall in love with your craft?

Hi Heather. I wanted to learn how to knit when I was in high school back in the 70s. I wanted to make a cape in hot pink! I took lessons and ended up with making about 1/2 a cape and it was horrible! Dropped stitches everywhere. I decided that maybe crocheting would be better, after all it was the 70s ;). I frogged that cape and made a shawl out of the yarn. I made a few more projects, a crocheted cape, and a few baby blankets and then I kind of let it go for a few years until I was married and expecting first baby and then I made everything to bring him home from the hospital--sweater, hat, booties, blanket and sewed a sleeper. Everything was yellow because in the late 70s we were still surprised about the baby's gender. Every now and then I'd pick up my hook and make something but it's been probably the last 9 years ago that I've been totally hooked on it and always have something in the works. You and your sister are so cute in your little hats.
ReplyDeleteHow cute!
ReplyDeleteMy first projects are scarves. We use them each winter. I also made an afgan for my son. It is holding up very well.
My love for crochet however comes from watching my grandmother make dolies and lace. I wish I was that good!
Aren't you 2 just the cutest?
ReplyDeleteP.S. Are ya'll twins? :)
That plc is just too darling! I also love the stitch/color of that afghan!
ReplyDeleteI renenber in the 70's all the girls making the vests. I don't remember making one, but I can recall my girlfriends and I in the summertime sitting underneath the trees crocheting. We were just starting out. I've made ripple ghans for all of us here, and they come in handy to shake off the chill. Love the picture so cute..Back in the 70's yellow or green....I remember those were the "in" colors at the time..
ReplyDeleteSweet... nice story. I decided I wanted to learn to crochet the winter of 2007, so I bought I taught myself to crochet book with hooks from Wal-Mart and some yarn, then hoped on youtube to learned how to make a chain and single crochet and make my very 1st scarf. My husbands aunt taught me how to do double crochet, I just wasnt understanding it & wasnt good at readin the patterns. Then all the girls in the family got a scarf that year for Christmas :)
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your stories, thank you for sharing them. :-)
ReplyDeleteDebi, yes, my sister and I are twins (fraternal). :-)
Hope everyone has a wonderful day and is able to fit in a little of their favorite hobby.
So sweet!! Your pic reminds me of me and my sis...dressed almost alike all the time and mom made many of our outfits.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful first blanket!!
My first project was a baby blanket for a childhood friend over 20 yrs ago. I have since learned that she kept that blanket and it is a treasured family heirloom.
So pretty. I started in Home Economics class and my Mom was so excited for me since she was a knitter and wished she could crochet. She just could never quite get the hang of it. Have you ever met people like that? No matter what I did to help her out she got frustrated with keeping the tension right. She turned to embroidery for a bit but soon arthritis prevented her from doing any of it so she just got me to crochet for her. I made so many pillow and afghans for her that I now have in my possession.
